“To listen well, is as powerful a means of influence as to talk well, and is as essential to all true conversation.” Chinese Proverb
I am writing this post on Listening at Poe’s Tavern in Sullivan’s Island, SC as I await my meeting of my new “girlfriend” Michelle from MakeGirlfriends.com. This place is well known, for this is where Edgar Alan Poe wrote. Many of their burgers are named after his poetry. Since I just wrote the power of listening and how important it is – you know that I will be listening carefully to what Michelle has to say upon meeting her. By the way, there's such a power of writing here in this space.
The art of listening is such a scrumptious gift. I find this a most valuable attribute of the human race. It’s fascinating to me that so many people hear but they actually don’t listen. Our minds get so cluttered that we don’t allow ourselves to listen.
A valuable friend listens to you, understands you and because they have listened they then validate what you are saying by a simple nod of the head or eye contact.
Isn’t it an amazing thing when you have a friend that actually listens to you? How about yourself – do you find yourself truly listening to another or are you guilty of your mind wandering to another place? I have to be honest, I am guilty of wandering off at times, and I have to make myself come back to the conversation. At times we have selective listening.
So next time you are in conversation – either in person or on the phone – be aware of your listening skills. Awareness is the first step.
Happy listening my friends,
Nancy
